Boys, Knives, Pumpkins

"For better or worse." I say this a lot these days. It's something about mothering boys. There are some things that are so inherently male that you want to encourage, or at least understand and acknowledge, them. On the other hand these things tend to be dirty and/or dangerous.

For better or worse, my kids like to use knives. While I'm impressed with their dexterity and ability to cut up their own dinners, the look of sheer joy they get when holding a knife is the "for worse."

For better, Mathis seems equally as enthusiastic about spoons.

Truitt had a strong opinion about what his jack-o-lantern was going to look like this year. He used a block as a guide and then gave Daddy very specific instructions for the mouth. Mathis opted for a printed template off the internet.

This year both boys participated in pumpkin carving at school. In each case, they were allowed to hold the knife at some point. They fully expected the same experience at home, but butter knives won't really cut it, so just like the years before, for better or worse, Daddy did 95% of the work.
