Big Night for a Big Boy

Last night was a big deal: Turtle's 1st night in his real, big boy bed! No, he didn't exactly lay right down and drift off to sleep on his own, but we start somewhere, right?

Basically, all day he was thrilled about the bed. He kept saying "nie nie" (night night) and wanting to crawl up on it before the mattress was even in place. The excitement built as we put the mattress on and wrapped it in his new big digger sheets! He was loving it. Until...

Bedtime. Dada read him his books on the couch as normal, but when it was time to get in to the bed for sleep, he was a little freaked. It's totally understandable and this isn't going to be an overnight thing. I kissed them both and left Dada and Turtle to sleep. He cried for a couple more minutes, but settled down quickly. However, Ray must have been in there an hour plus. He just wouldn't settle in to sleep... I'm sure new smell, new feel, new sheets, everything was disruptive. He did sleep his 1st few hours as usual but when he woke Ray went back in to lay down with him. He never quite settled in the way he should so Dada spent the night in his room and they were both out like lights when I went in at 5:15 am to get Ray up for yoga. Turtle slept alone for the next hour or so, but he always stirs around 6-6:30 and waking up alone wasn't what he had anticipated. At 6:00 I brought him in to my room and we never went back to sleep but we did rest until his bright eyed and bushy tailed self was in my tired and wanting to sleep face desiring a fort.

It will get easier, but it's a transition. It takes time. Still, it's so cute to see how happy he is to have it in his room (which is a good start) and how he likes to put Elmo and his trucks to bed. He truly is getting to be a big boy, but I don't think I'll really know how big until the little one comes along...

I also have to show what Truitt built for Mama the other day. I guess the giant dumptruck wasn't enough on it's own. On top of it went another dump truck, a recycling truck with a racecar in its bucket and a bulldozer being driven by 2 mini basketballs on top:

I'm right there with you on the big boy/girl bed. Tough stuff.
