The Tipping Point

Toddlers hate to go to bed, especially when there is fun to be had. Truitt has always been a pretty fluid kid, espeically since he is a bad sleeper anyway. Because of this, we never have trouble taking him out to events or staying out a little later on the weekends. I thought that kid could probably stay up all night and not care or miss a beat.

But a couple of weekends ago we discovered The Toddler Tipping Point. In other words, we witnessed exactly the hour at which toddlers go from just happy to be awake to crazy, delierious and uncontrollable. It's right around 10:15 pm.

It was the weekend of Ray's birthday and we had our good friends the Perises and McConns over for (delicious, if I do say so myself) beer braised short ribs over papardelle, roasted root veggies and vino, vino, vino. We were all enjoying dinner and relaxing and just figured we could let the kids go. When it gets too late, we thought, we can put on a movie and they can chill on the couch.

Not these kids. This is what we ended up with:

Random jags of crying for no discernable reason

Compulsive spinning; total loss of inhibitions

Floor tantrums; who knows what

...and disgusted looks from Baby Brother.

Finally, Mathis and Hollis just had enough of the nonsense and went to bed:

There was only one way to get the kids back on course. Naturally, engage the fathers in a few rounds of Ring Around The Rosey. Isn't that what you would do?

And just when it couldn't get any more ridiculous, we decided to give them cake. It was a birthday party, after all. Low and behold, it was the 1st time all night they actually sat still:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DADDY!
