As a reminder, our old bathroom was white with black trim. While close to what it probably was historically, I wanted something a little softer in such a small room. Ray and I picked a medium tone gray that still has the kind of retro feel you need in a bungalow bathroom but is softer and more modern at the same time.
Tile going in to the shower.
Rather than the towel bar like the old shower, we decided to have them frame out a little cubby for shampoo bottles. I absolutely love the way it looks and will definitely be more useful. After all, the only thing we ever used the towel bar for was resting shampoo bottles on.
TA DA!!
One of the biggest changes was the decision to not retile the walls. We saved money by doing this but I also think it's going to make the room look bigger and be easier to clean. Rather than do an alternating tile pattern on the floor, we went with a simple border, which I love love love.
After the tile was down and grouted, the trim carpenters came in to wrap up their job before Thanksgiving. They framed out the door for the linen closet conversion in the hallway. I can't believe how much needed storage this is going to give us. They also replaced some moulding with water damage around Truitt's door and framed out the window.
The carpenter's big job, though, was the built in cabinets. Where the useless and grody closet used ot be, we are going to have a deep drawer and upper and lower cabinet. The bottom shelf in the upper cabinet will actually be a open top drawer and then 3 adjustable shelves above. The bottom cabinet will have 2 adjustable shelves. With all the towels and paper products going in to the hall closet, we'll have storage to spare in the bathroom.
The shelf in the middle will have a gray and white marble top, like this:
This marble was supposed to match the marble for our custom vanity and sink top. However, the sink has been the big issue. That stupid prison sink was only 18 deep and attached to the wall. We quickly realized that adding a vanity would make the space between the sink and bathtub unreasonably tight. After looking at a slew of options, I decided to go with a pedestal sink. I had to sacrifice the shape of sink I wanted and go with something a little more traditional. I had settled on the pedestal when I found out that the sink top I had chosen had an option of a chrome base that is only 11" deep. I read some reviews and several people mentioned how it was perfect for their small bathrooms. Sold. While I am disappointed we won't have a nice marble counter and back splash, I think this sink will fit in the space and look great:
I am really excited for the painters to come. After that, the fixtures will go back in and we will be very close to having a functioning 2nd bathroom. Let's just say 6 people and one bathroom has been interesting...
