In a conversation about Easter last week, a friend of mine said "Without celebrating the Resurrection, isn't Easter just like any other Sunday?" She wasn't being mean spirited at all and I think it's a very valid question. Certainly Easter has a special value to those who are celebrating their religious faith. However, another friend was quick to tell her that there are a great many people who look at Easter as a re-birth of another kind. Welcoming in Spring, for example.
In our house, we don't really see it as a Spring thing, but we don't celebrate Easter in the traditional Christian sense either. Much like Christmas, being raised in Christian homes has given Ray and I an appreciation for special times celebrated with family. For Easter, we enjoy getting dressed up and going out, spending some good time together as a family with no other distractions. Frankly, even though we're not celebrating in the same spirit, it's so nice to be out with all the other families. Anywhere you go on Easter there is a real sense of togetherness. You truly only get that feeling one other day of the year. It's something quite nice to be a part of.
This year for Easter we did not have our brunch-partners-in-crime, The Youngers, so we went as just The Torgersons. I don't know if we did the wrong thing, but again this year we did not get in to the depths of the Easter Bunny mythology with Truitt. It just didn't seem necessary. He had plenty of egg hunts and could definitely feel something festive in the air, but I don't think the concept of a bunny bringing him goodies in the middle of the night would have really registered. Instead, he had a giant egg from Grammy. So over the top, this egg. I recycled some of his hunt eggs in to it- no need to add more candy to the mix- and a couple of Thomas trains. He was one happy boy. In fact, he never even thought twice about the candy once he saw his new trains!

What candy?

One of Ray's favorite things about Easter is a damn good reason to bust out some seer sucker. Here are my handsome men getting ready to head to brunch:
For brunch we went to Gravitas. It was good. They aren't usually a brunch location, but it was nice and the food was excellent. Here I have matched the diner with their lovely meal for your blog reading enjoyment:
Mama had some wonderful Eggs Benedict- traditional style which is my fave. I was disappointed they didn't have any breakfast potatoes, but the fries were certainly yummy enough.
Sticking with a 'sucker' theme, Dada went with the chalkboard special: suckling pig ham with mashed potatoes and corn hash. Truitt doesn't usually like to eat chunks of meat (wierdo) but even he agreed that ham was tops!
What would a 2 year old in a linen suit eat if not a Gruyere grilled cheese on artisan bread? I tell you, that was one fine sandwich. Dada said it's the 2nd best grilled cheese ever after Mama's.

Oh. My. God. I LOVE Ray's seersucker! I can't get David to wear it, boohoo.
Probably a good call on the Easter Bunny business...how confusing for a little kid. Rabbits, eggs, candy...?
